double ear infections!

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Well, the mystery of the recurring fever has been solved!  Both of Nicholas’ ears are infected.  His first (and second!) ear infections.  He has had a fever on and off since Sunday, ranging from 98.6 to 102.7.  At first we thought it was a reaction to his vaccinations, which I suppose it still could have been, but the doc wanted to see him after it lasted more than 48 hours.  It is a good thing he had the fevers or we probably wouldn’t have taken him in because otherwise he is fine.  He hasn’t been tugging/playing with his ears and *knock on wood* has been sleeping fine.  He has been a little more fussy sometimes but he is also teething and his eating isn’t the best but he is a one year old.   So any “symptoms” had other explanations.  Overall though he is happy and continues to reek havoc around the house.  He is on antibiotics- again! Kid cannot catch a break this month!  Hopefully February will be a healthier month around here.

He was feeling well enough to help me unpack the groceries today, though.  I just wish he’d eat that food he is playing with!

A new friend came to visit

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

As you know, Nicholas is a big fan of the vacuum.  But Grandma and Grandpa brought a new friend to stay with us for awhile- a carpet cleaner.  He loves the thing.  He chased it, stood in front of it, talked to it and everything while it was running.  It is so funny!  It lives in the kitchen for now and he talks to it everyday.  I swear he has real life people friends too! :)

don't hold me back! let me at it!! I want YOU! supervising the carpet cleaning. wait, come back!

It is always fun when grandparents come to play and this weekend visit was no different.  Nicholas has a big belly and it is just perfect for kissing!

grandpa1 he was loving this!

And then here are some cute pictures from today.

Snow day!

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Turns out it does snow in the south! We had about 6 inches fall here. We bundled up Nicholas and took him outside. He enjoyed walking on the cleared sidewalks, but could do without the cold snow. I think it was just too cold on his little hands. Of course he refused to wear his mittens. Poor guy, we don’t have a snow suit or anything for him (we are in NC after all!). He was wearing two pairs of pants, a thermal bodysuit, a sweatshirt, hat then jacket. And of course his big boy sneakers!

walking in the snow man, snow is cold! you can see a little handprint there though! snow2 handsome boy

Here are some beautiful pictures that Matthew took this afternoon.  I am not the biggest fan of snow, but man is it pretty!

A fort, the vacuum and real shoes

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Hanging around the house when you don’t feel well can be boring. So we shook things up yesterday with a fort and the vacuum. Nicholas LOVES the vacuum. It is ridiculous. He runs in front of it, sits and will almost let you run into him. He is just mesmerized by it. Before we put it away, he always has to hang out with it for awhile.

After the cleaning excitement, we made a tent in the living room with a couple of sheets and chairs (Thanks WQ for the idea!). Nicholas seemed to like it. He ran in and out, flopped on the pillows all while squealing. He also enjoyed playing peek-a-boo. Very cute! Sorry the pictures are blurry, he wouldn’t hold still. Yes, I know he has Christmas pajamas on in January. They are warm and it is freeeeeezing here in NC!

We ventured to the hardware store and Target today. And Nicholas wore “real” shoes! Shoes are so hard to get on his feet because he curls up his little toes. He makes it near impossible to put any hard-soled shoe on. So he has been wearing knock-off Robeez from Target. Well, today we were successful with sneakers! He let me put them on and after a minute of fussing, he got right up and off he went. He did stop for a few minutes sort of shaking his foot (picture a cat when she has tape or something stuck to her foot) but then he ran all over and was fine. He thought he was hot stuff walking into Qdoba’s for lunch too. He held daddy’s hand and walked right on in like a big boy. And then flirted with the little girl at the next table!

So sick and tired of being sick and tired!

Friday, January 16th, 2009

We’ve been dealing with an incredibly yucky cold virus in the Maravillas household for close to 2 weeks now. Nicholas has been to the doc twice now, in addition to his well baby visit on Jan 2nd. Which oddly enough was the last time he was “well”. The latest visit this week resulted in antibiotics. The doc said that his “booger bubbles” weren’t a good sign! They are pretty gross too. Thankfully his lungs were clear despite a nasty cough so it is just a persistent upper respiratory infection. His fever came back last night. Still low grade but there. We’ve had to reschedule his 12 month vaccinations 3 times now. Hopefully he’ll get them before his next check up!

Nicholas has shared the love too. I have been sick just as long as him. Then he shared with his friends at the babysitter’s. Her two kiddos are sick and on medicine and the new baby girl who just started last week is off to the doctor. :( Everyone says that is just how daycares work, but I feel terrible that other kids are sick too. He wasn’t even “sick” the one day he went and once he got a fever and sounded bad, I stayed home with him. Guess he was germy before we knew it. Let’s hope this is a very healing weekend and everyone feels better next week!

you need two bunnies to nap when you don't feel well don't mind the boogers on my nose or pj's.

12 Month Check-up

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

I totally forgot to post about this. We went last Friday and Nicholas was given a clean bill of health. Too bad we went back 5 days later for a nasty cold.

He is 21lb, 2oz (25th percentile), 31.5 inches tall (85th percentile) and his head is 19 inches around (90th percentile). So still a string bean with a big head. Doc was pleased though and said he may start gaining again soon, especially because he loves to eat so much. But after he looked Matthew and I over, he said that we “aren’t gonna have no fat baby!”. At his growth rate, he is still on track to be 6′0″-6′1″. Doc was impressed with his walking and development overall. As he should be, our precocious prodigy!

We postponed his vaccinations a week because we didn’t want him cranky for his birthday party. But then he was sick this week, so we postponed them till the 16th. He’ll get all new shots, so hopefully he won’t have a reaction like he usually does. Although I was told that the fact he tends to get a fever after vaccinations is a sign that he has a good immune system. Something about it reacting quickly and strongly to new intruders. That made me happy. I just wish his little bod could shake this nasty cold that we seem to be sharing. He is so pitiful. :(

His majesty’s new throne

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Nicholas has a big boy car seat! It is huge and when installing it, Matthew referred to it as his throne. So the name stuck! He is sick so he wasn’t as excited as we thought he’d be but still seemed to enjoy the new front-facing view. And yes, he is playing with a cat food can. Don’t ask.

big boy still soooo big.
