Halloween 2009
This Halloween didn’t exactly go as planned. Poor Bubba definitely got more tricks than treats.
Nana, Papa and Uncle Matt came down on Friday to celebrate Matt’s birthday. Nicholas had been congested for a few days but he didn’t have a fever and seemed okay. We went out to a special birthday dinner for Matt and Nicholas ate and behaved so well. He seemed fine besides a stuffy, runny nose and a little cough. Well, it all went downhill overnight. He was up basically all night. He didn’t want to lay down and we spent many hours just sitting in the rocking chair with him laying on my chest, head on my shoulder. We had hoped to go to HollyFest Saturday morning but it was drizzly raining so we decided it was best to stay home. Nicholas’ cough was getting worse all morning and by late morning had a lovely whistling sound to it. That can’t be good. So we made an appointment with the doc- thank goodness for Saturday hours! I was hesitant to go, thinking that they’d say it was a cold and send us home. Turns out it is just a virus however it is doing nasty things to his airways. He was not moving much air by the time we got to the office. He was taking quick shallow breaths. As soon as the doc (who was dressed as Dorothy- very neat!) listened to him, she ordered a breathing treatment with a nebulizer and albuterol to open him up so he could breathe easier. That was the longest 10 minutes of my life so far. Not only was he unhappy from being at the doctor’s, but he was exhausted from being up all night and it was past his naptime and now a sweet nurse wanted to put a mask on his face and make him breath this medicated mist in for 10 minutes. It took me, his Nana and the nurse to hold him down and get him to breathe it in. I cried. He cried and kept yelling “stop”, “no!” and pointing to the door saying “that way!”. Broke my heart. He basically passed out when it was over from sheer exhaustion. The nurse rechecked his oxygen stats and they were 98, which wasn’t bad. The doc listened to him again and he was much clearer. He took a 20 minute nap on my chest while they got us squared away with a rental nebulizer and we went home with orders to do the treatments every 4 hours for the first 24 hours then taper back to every 4-6 hours until he gets rechecked on Tuesday. It was pretty scary seeing as how I just thought it was a simple cold. And how quickly he got so bad. Fortunately, the breathing treatments make a difference and he has been taking them much easier at home. He is so hoarse from the coughing too and sounds so pitiful. He isn’t eating too much, but is enjoying some candy we saved for him. He loves some MnM’s!
Given the circumstances, we thought it was best not go trick or treating. It made us very sad!! He seems okay and still plays but we didn’t want to expose him to any new germs seeing as how he had enough already. Luckily he is still too young to really know what he was missing and instead had fun watching a new choo-choo movie that Nana got him, eating popsicles and ice cream for dinner and playing with Uncle Matt. He loves his Uncle Matt! We’ll just have to do it up big next year to make up for this year!
We dressed him up in his construction worker costume this morning for pictures. He makes one cute little handy man if you ask me! Here are some pictures from the weekend!

((Hugs)) Laurie! You must have been a nervous wreck over the past couple of days. I can’t imagine how scary it must be when your child is so sick and having trouble breathing. No wonder the two of you haven’t slept! I’m glad Nicholas’ breathing treatments have been going well; I hope he makes a speedy recovery. Poor boy.

Awww – I’m so sorry! That sounds horrible! I hope he continues to get better and tolerate the breathing treatments. What a weekend!!!
